LEATHERMAN TOOL GROUP, INC. ACQUIRES GERMAN FLASHLIGHT MANUFACTURER, LED LENSER
Leatherman Tool Group, Inc., parent company of the world's largest multi-tool manufacturer has signed a definitive contract (4/5/11) to acquire majority interest in Zweibrüder Optoelectronics GmbH & Co. KB (Solingen, Germany), the manufacturer of LED LENSER® flashlights. All Leatherman operations and manufacturing will remain in the United States. No locational changes are planned for LED LENSER design and engineering in Solingen, Germany or manufacturing in the company-owned 1,000,000 square-foot facility in Yang Jiang, China. Following the acquisition, LTG expanded its workforce by 1100 people bringing the total size of the company to 1500.
Founded in 1994, LED LENSER has revolutionized the LED flashlight market with cutting-edge innovation for optics, light construction and focusing systems. The development of the patented Advanced Focus System (AFS) technology - the only optic system in the world to use a combination lens/reflector system - has made them the most popular brand of LED light in Europe.
All Lumens Are Not Created Equal
Traditionally light-focusing systems have consisted of either a lens, or reflector. Lenses are good for up-close reading, yet over long distances almost 70% of the light is scattered and lost. Conversely, while reflectors capture a higher percentage of light for long-distances, when they are used for up-close reading "rings" and "holes" in the light pattern can lead to eye fatigue. Subsequently manufacturers' statements of lumens (brightness) loose their validity because of all the misdirected/wasted light.
With AFS, LED LENSER engineers have combined the strengths of a lens and reflector into one optic. A 100-lumen light with AFS will appear much brighter than a 100-lumen light without because the AFS light is so much more effective at capturing, concentrating, and projecting the light. AFS provides clear, homogeneous light for up-close reading and a sharply-focused beam for long-distance viewing. It means things like reading the map up-close is easy on the eyes and then focusing to find the path or landmark in the distance, clear and bright.
Also built into the lights with AFS is Rapid Focus; a quick and easy way to operate up-close or long-distance viewing (and all points in between). The Rapid Focus bezel is designed to be pulled towards, or pushed away from the user with just one hand to adjust for viewing. No more fiddling with bezels screwing and unscrewing them, for focusing and de-focusing.
Not Just Brighter But Smarter
Sometimes you want constant power to your light. Other times you know you'll be out for awhile and want to conserve energy. Smart Light Technology found in many of the LED LENSER lights allows the user to choose between "constant currant" and "energy saving" modes for light operation.
Add to that individualized programs that can be set quickly and easily with a simple click of the tail switch. There's one for professionals, an easy everyday mode, and one for defense. Each program has unique functions from simple on/off to, "S.O.S." and even a potentially lifesaving "defense strobe."
Construction, Materials and Reporting Standards
With many lights on the market, their design doesn't allow for individual part replacement. This means more materials make their way into landfills, as whole light systems are disposed of instead of individual/smaller sections as needed. With the LED LENSER modular system, the light can be repaired or replaced in sections as needed, making it easier, faster and better for the environment to perform warranty services. This design also uses fewer points of electrical contact overall, meaning fewer chances for electrical failure.
LED LENSER lights are constructed from high-quality materials including anodized aluminum, gold-plated contacts, polycarbonate optics and "top-bin" LED chips. All LED LENSER specifications (light output/lumens, beam distance, water resistance, etc.) are measured and reported using ANSI/FL 1 standards as published by the National Electronics Manufacturers Association (NEMA).
Products for Every Market
The LED LENSER line includes lights and headlamps, for everything from camping, diving, running, hunting and fishing to industrial trades, DIY and law enforcement. Sizes range from keychain to 1000+ lumen, heavy-duty defense lamps. As of June 1, 2011, Leatherman Tool Group, Inc. became the official distributor of LED LENSER lights in the United States and they are now available via store-front and online retailers around the country. MSRP ranges from $15.00 to $500.00 USD. All lights are backed by a five-year warranty.
